The Tea Drinking rituals of China are quite intriguing as it has a lot of hierarchy practices to it. For instance a Boss will never pour a cup of tea for his juniors and the youngsters pour tea for the elders in the family. Even apologies, thanksgiving and peace offerings are made via tea. The cha.t Chinese Tea Set is crossbreed of contemporary equipment with these conventional values in mind. On one hand the kettle, cups and intentions are traditional. The tray on the other, is infused with modernization by including a heating element to it.

Apostrophe / Winter Wonderland

This Christmas, Apostrophe, the London-based boulangerie-patisserie group, is launching Window Wonderland, a competition to design artwork that will be displayed in 11 of Apostrophe’s central-London sites.

Under the theme of Window Wonderland, entrants will be given free reign in terms of style and subject matter. The 10 shortlisted and 1 winning designs will be printed on vinyl measuring 1.5m2 in size and applied to the windows.

Apostrophe is offering generous prizes, including free coffee or tea for six months for the 11 finalists, and a £1000 prize for the overall winner, granted in the form of either an educational bursary or a charitable contribution. More info here »

Wake Up to An Alarming Juice, Toast, and Coffee

Ou de chocolat! The one time I was in France in my life, I stayed at a nice place of lodging just down the street from the Moulin Rouge (no lies!) And in this place of lodging, every morning, we were served toast and a choice of “café, tea, ou de chocolate.” And with the “Wake Up” alarm, that’s just the choices you’ll get. Every morning. Automatically.

These designers design in French, so you’ll notice I took the liberty of keeping their original instructional notes in French with an English translation below. This project hardly needs instructions, however, as the whole thing is basically intuitive.

Set your alarm.

Make sure whatever you’d like to have ready in the morning is set up (make sure the toaster is loaded, that the juice, coffee, and/or chocolate are in their respective slots.)

Click the buttons for the items you’d like made.

Wake up the next morning to a Yanko approved breakfast!

*MY MISTAKE! This project offers Juice in place of the Tea from my story. But I’m sure you could jury-rig it to whip you up some fine chai.

Just a Lilly Tea for You

Perhaps you have heard of this beautiful flower? It catches the eye, it enthralls the mind, it lies in the water existing only to be beautiful. All of these fancy qualities were necessary in order for designer Sait Alanyali to come up with this whimsical tea set. In the same way that the mind blooms on the refreshing taste combinations of the tea, the flower expands, open to welcome back the empty cup again - cradling it as you leave it once more in the bosom of the pedal bed.

Whafty, yes? Haukland imagined a world where the spoon would no longer fall to the middle of the plate. To resolve this problem, he turned the plate into a flower. It is called the “Nilufer Tea Set.”

More parts to clean and a prettier world - one feels disinclined to argue for or against this solution. Watch the video before you decide - surely the extreme elegance will win you over.

I am so excited to finally share with you my new venture, BAKERY.

I spent a lot of time building Design Milk into a successful blog, and it continues to grow every day. I love doing this more than anything else I have ever done. But I felt the need to take it to the next level, to share it.

For the past few years, I received mounds of emails requesting advice on anything and everything from affiliate programs to best times to post to how to get advertisers to Twitter. After spending much time trying to find the right person to work with, I came across Erin. She’s the butter to my bread, the frosting on my cinnamon bun, the honey to my tea.

Together, we combined our network of thousands of indie/small biz contacts and formed BAKERY to assist small business owners and independent artists and designers in navigating the wild waters of social networking, new media, and all things Internet. We work with and for small and local businesses, indie designers, emerging artists, and we can even help your mom understand “The Facebook”.

Great post from Michael Bierut over on Design Observer about his 85 notebooks spanning his 26 year career. I’m a pretty lazy person when it comes to reading and I don’t get designers showing their sketchbooks (it’s a bit like them saying they like tea) but the way he writes had me reading every word.

Ants On My Cup

Ants On My Cup is the work of Re Jin Lee, founder and designer of Bailey Doesn’t Bark, a contemporary wares, textiles and paper goods company. The very realistic look of the ants printed on the cup triggered a lot of different opinions, people didn’t know whether to be disgusted by the idea of ants with their tea, or to be fascinated by the excellent work of design.

That’s One Fancy Teacup

I love me some tea but sometimes I’m just too lazy to properly steep lose leaf teas in a separate pot. I just want the whole shabang done in a nicely designed cup, not just some cheap mesh screen. Enter the LOTUS Gaibei. Beautiful double-walled porcelain cup with a sliding lid/strainer. I’m sure you could deduce how it works from the pictures. I especially love the ridges meant to look like the veins of lotus leaves. DO WANT!

Ivo Vos a concept, product and interaction designer, based in London, developed The Brunch. A series of consumer products that celebrate the mundane. Bread Slicer facilitates even, uniform, precision - cuts. Toaster brings knowledge, skill and anticipation to the toasting of a slice of bread, set angle and force to exactly hit your plate. Cutlery perfectly aligned on Placemat is rendered invisible, the Holy Grail of table placement. Teapot records the height one is able to pour tea from. Milk and Sugar allow for meticulous taste.

Win a lot of milk

To be fair, I didn’t know what to call this post. Basically Cravendale are offering you the chance to win a year’s supply of milk if you can design them a funky birthday card. Whether they’ll deliver a cow on loan to your back garden for 12 months is for you to take up with them, but as design offices drink loads of tea and coffee them maybe it’s a good opportunity to do something creative and win something ace.

From the official press release… “Cravendale celebrates it’s 10th birthday this month and to mark the occasion there will be a competition launching on Monday giving users the chance to win a year’s supply of milk. The comp will run from Mon 6th- Fri 31st October and all you have to do to enter is draw a birthday card in the MyCravendale art application which can be found on Cravendale’s site.”

It seems like everywhere I look I've been reading about Chinese designers Neri & Hu. Their collection, which includes both furniture and accessories, debuted at 100% Design Shanghai in July. Highlights from their portfolio includes: 'Boli Double Wall Glass', which is made to resemble, "a conventional tea glass form...within the confines of the modern glass shape", '1/3 Salt & Peppers' - 3 shakers that allow for the inclusion of white pepper, a spice commonly used in China and the 'Extrude Wood Stool Collection' - inspired by the shape of bamboo and lotus roots.
