This book will survey the innovative entrepreneurial options a broad group of contemporary graphic designers have engaged in over the past decade, while also addressing the creative, fabrication and promotion issues necessary to bring unique products to the marketplace. It stems from the School of Visual Arts MFA “Designer as Author/Entrepreneur Program” (most notably, Deborah Adler’s unique reinvention of prescription drug packages adopted by Target* and other successful alumni) as well as other well-known and up and coming designers who have created successful cottage and mainstream design businesses (i.e. Charles Spencer Anderson’s CSA** image archive and Doug Powell’s HealthSimple*** product line). These firms and individuals have wed their designers’ talents and entrepreneurial spirit to viable products or lines of products.

Great North Run 2009

Last sunday I ran the Great North Run for charity, completing the half marathon in 2hr17min. Above is a pretty poor picture of me. There aren’t many good pictures as I was goosed; I’ve never ran that far in my life before. But there it is, to prove I ran it. My feet are still mashed up, blistered and sore.

Anyway, thanks to the chaps who’ve kindly donated to the fund so far, your support is really appreciated. I still need a bit more to achieve my target, so if anyone can spare a couple of quid for a really deserving charity please can you sponsor me here.

Hello all you nice readers of Dirty Mouse. This coming sunday (20th September) I am running the Great North Run, a 13.1 mile race in Newcastle Upon Tyne, for charity. I am trying to raise £200 for Traidcraft, an excellent North East-based charity who do terrific work in the developing world. As you may be aware, Dirty Mouse is operated not-for-profit, so I can’t just throw in pots of cash from Dirty Mouse as there isn’t any.

I met Angelo at the Roger Williams Hotel, whose lobby was nicely and moderately designed with pops of color. I was a nervous dork wreck, as he’s one of my favorite designers: have you ever seen his home? It’s amazing. I never mentioned that his home is on my list of favorites cause I didn’t want to be too “uncool”. But, ever since that HGTV Christmas special when he had a cookie party, I’ve admired his design aesthetic. Anyway, he’s super nice, totally down to earth, and gracious. Oh, and he’s a self-proclaimed “Design Geek”.

Besides his new line called angelo:HOME, which I’ve already written about on ShelterPop, I had a few questions for Angelo that I thought would be really fun to post here on DM. Check out some more pics of his new line & some fun facts after the jump.

First of all, he collects squirrels and that is just odd. Apparently it’s just some sort of recent compulsion with no history behind it other than “I like squirrels”. Well, I guess he’s never lived in my apartment building because the ones we have are highly-trained attack squirrels (or, “Jersey squirrels” as we call them here).

Every designer has moments of shame, you know like mirrored lacquer furniture, a tiki basement disaster, or the dreaded metallic 1970s metallic wallpaper on the walls and ceiling of a small rust shag carpeted bathroom. I had to ask Angelo about his most embarrassing design moment. When he was 11, he went out, bought mallard duck wallpaper and wood trim and single-handedly wallpapered his bedroom and installed a chair rail. I was disturbed, yet intrigued and thought, maybe he was really into hunting? He said he had a thing for ducks. OK, fair enough.

I wanted to find out more about where he shops and which designers he really enjoys because we all love to know that even HGTV designers love to shop where we do! We both agree that Target and Crate and Barrel (& cb2) are the tops. Locally (LA), he enjoys shopping at HD Buttercup, Gibson, and Kohlman Quinn (who recently closed its doors, but we hope they’ll get an online shop up and running asap!).

Dorm Design Under $400

It’s that time of year, where students are heading back to school and dealing with the pressure of balancing studies, social lives and work. Although I’m an apartment-living grad student here in Brooklyn, NY, I know what it’s like to design on a budget, while also trying to fit clean lines into tight spaces. So, for those heading back to the dorms next month, or for anyone looking to decorate for less, here are 10 items that organize, de-stress, and offer affordable style.

We recently received an email from a male reader asking us to put together affordable dorm room decor, so I thought it would be a fun challenge! My main goal in developing this list was to find solid design elements with great price tags. I mostly stuck to neutral colors, and where there are lively patterns, buyers can exchange for styles that best fit their personality. It’s the framework for a complete room under $400.

1. Melltrop Dining table, IKEA, $49.99
This is a great desk option. Its square shape offers addition storage room underneath, and the easy-to-clean white surface keeps a small room bright.

2. Script desk lamp, CB2, $29.95 [Sale]
This white lacquer lamp compliments the desk. Both contemporary and cheap.

3. Honeycomb Hook, Urban Outfitters, $24.00
Hooks are a the way to maximize space, and the hipster’s favorite: honeycomb, offers a little personality to a fairly common solution.

4. Lack Wall shelf, IKEA, $29.99
Ikea’s Lack collection has become every modern furniture lovers go-to when designing on a budget. These shelves can be stacked up a wall, offering additional storage in a tight space.

5. Dorm Basic Bedding Set, Target, $79.99
This basic bedding collection in white takes care of the necessities. White keeps a small room looking big, while touches of color can be added through the purchase of bright pillows and throws.

6. Polarvide Throw, IKEA, $3.99
Nice detail and splash of color for four dollars.

7. Myskmalva pillowcases, IKEA, $7.99
These shams offer the touch of color I was talking about. Could be exchanged for any other bright or bold print to keep the interiors alive.

8. “Get Your Sh*t Together” 8×10 print, Orange Beautiful, $12.00
I have this hung next to my bedroom door as a cheeky reminder to stay motivated every day. Etsy is a great place to shop for limited prints and budget art. You’ll find something to fit any style.

9. Tab-Top Window Panel, Target, $17.99
Keep curtains simple and long. It’ll naturally heighten the ceiling and keep small rooms bright, especially if there is only one window.

10. Home Shag Rug in Mushroom Brown, Target, $129.99
Whether you’re working with tile, wood, or carpeted floors, I find that a rug really makes a home. Invest in a neutral color and you can change wall and window treatments, or even bedding without having to replace it. Also great for extra seating that’s actually comfortable.

'Transitionist' Deanne Cheuk effortlessly shifts between the roles of designer, artist, illustrator, and art director, establishing an epic body of work.

Deanne Cheuk landed her first job as an art director at the age of 19, the same year she graduated from Curtin University with a degree in graphic design. Since then, she has produced a wildly diverse body of work, everything from art direction and design, to illustration and printmaking. She has art directed Tokion Magazine; been commissioned to create art by corporations like American Express, Urban Outfitters, and The New York Times Magazine; published a book of her art titled Mushroom Girls Virus; and launched her own line of products through Target. Born in Perth, Australia, the multi-disciplined artist now lives in New York City.

You got your first job as an art director at a magazine at the age of 19. Can you tell me how that opportunity came about and what attracted you to the job?

I was in my final year of University in Perth, part of the course was that we had to find ourselves a 'Mentor', someone in the field that we were interested in. The prerequisite was that we would see them once a week and show them our work to get critiqued on. I chose a new magazine from Perth called REVelation Magazine. It was the only youth culture magazine coming out of Australia at the time, and by the end of my University year the publisher asked me if I wanted to try to art direct an issue and I stayed there for 3 years.

Art directing requires the ability to have a big picture view counterbalanced by a strict attention to detail. When and how do you think you developed an eye for this type of work?

I've learned everything from just working. I am still learning! Each project is so different, art directing a magazine is different to art directing a catalog or lookbook or book, each client is different too obviously. I do think I approach my projects in a unique way as I am an art director as well as an illustrator/artist, so I look at page almost as an image.

You're a multi-disciplined artist, working in typography, illustration, collage, etc. -- how do you decide what medium to work in for any given project?

I'm a Transitionist â a working designer and artist. Though, the medium of my work is usualy dictated by the project/client. Sometimes I get to do a combination of art direction/type/illustration, but mostly it is separate projects. Each medium that I work in continues to inform the style of the other mediums though.

One of the mediums you do a great deal of work in is t-shirts. How is conceiving a design for a t-shirt different than say, 2-D work?

It is still an illustration and piece of art, the only restrictions often come in the limited palette of colors that some brands may use.

Neomu is a great zine. Can you tell me when you founded the publication and what inspired its creation?

It was founded in 2000, I had moved to New York and closed up the magazine 'Mu' that I used to publish from Australia. I missed publishing, I was still in touch with my contributors, and I was frustrated with overpriced design books and magazines. I wanted to create something that was free and good, so in the end Neomu was priced at $1 in each country's currency but I gave the copies to stores for free and they donated the proceeds to charities. I published 8 issues completely out of my own pocket until the last issue in 2005. I would still like to do a couple more issues but the time hasn't been right yet. I like that illustration trends continue to change and I think the next issue, whenever that may be, will be a really interesting departure from the last issue.

Back in 2005, you released your first book, Mushroom Girls Virus, which has a tagline that reads: "A guide to the identification and study of our commoner fungi with special emphasis on the edible varieties." How did the idea for the book come about?

I was commissioned to do a psychedelic and bohemian inspired illustration for a client and I loved how that turned out so I did a few more and then I started to get loads of commissions for more and more in the same style over a couple of years. A lot of the work hadn't been widely seen and also I was feeling like the style â which was girls and mushrooms â was getting a bit old, so I decided to publish it all in a book and be done with that style and move on. A publisher had approached me about my interest to doing a book and it felt right at the time.

What projects are you currently working on -- and what has you really excited right now in your world?

I'm curating the new issue of Theme Magazine with Chris Rubino, the issue is about Transitionists. I'm working on some patterns for textiles; making new drawings for a show I have in January in Sydney at the Monster Children Gallery; putting together work for a group show at the California State University, Fullerton, Art Gallery in August; also putting together work for a Gap Pop-up store exhibition later this month... along with working on a few other small design projects and publications.

Self-Aware All-Sports Steady-Cam

Not quite on the level of chwarzenegger or Optimus Prime, but it’s getting there. The Chasercam intelligent sports-camera comes basically in two parts: the camera (with base), and the sensor target. When activated, the camera turns on it’s base and up and down, seeking in all directions the sensor target. What you do is stick one to the person doing the tricks, and one to the person who is chasing the person doing the tricks. Total coverage!

Gotta strive for total coverage. You can’t exactly do that too well with the head-cams of today, where whenever you, the film person, have to watch where YOU are going on your own bike, or skateboard, or snowboard, etc. - you’ll be crashin! Now you haven’t got to worry about that!

With the camera base sitting on top of your head, the camera seeks automatically - and in a steady manner - the target. The target, safely attached to the athlete, is a sure shot for where the action is.

E’mo, No Not That Kind

Precise Measures While Doing Interiors

If you failed math in school or hated triangles, this theory may go bouncers on you. I’m not giving you the Pythagorean theorem to prove but simply telling you of this handy device that could get you the perfectly angled walls and smooth looking interiors. The Red Point Measure is a digital measure that applies current laser ray measure techniques to mathematics formula of triangles by simply measuring a target from afar.

Comprising of two detective arms and a red light this is how the instrument is used:
“Just swing the two detective arms and use red light to point at the 2 ending points of target length, and then the length will be shown on the screen.”

Do away with the climbing up and down to the target, or asking someone to help you to measure big or long objects. Simply DIY!
