The Woofer Power of a BEAR

Behold, if you DARE, the Eco Woof; the sub-woofer that’s got the woofer power of a BEAR! But CHILL! There is no bear actually powering the “Eco-Woof,” only the power of glass domes. Where wood boxing would normally hold the raw beats exploded forth from the speakers, glass domes and downward facing blasters suffice. The wood grain is so very classy, wouldn’t you say? Oh, and there’s green in it, too!

From here it gets cryptic. As you may well know, many of the submissions and discoveries Yanko gets and makes are made by people who speak limited english. This is one of those times. So as an added attraction for this post, the details of the speakers are translated here in their original state:

*NOTE to the wise: I don’t believe the bear being reflected on the woofer is meant to be seen as a printed image, rather as a reflection of the power of the sound. So, that in mind, remember this year when you’re celebrating “Bear Week,” you need to celebrate with your very own Eco-Woof speaker system.

Creative Grab Bag is a collection of work from artists, illustrators and designers from around the world. Author Ethan Bodnar created over 30 unique tasks and gave each contributor a task that was different from their typical work. The book contains images of each artist’s creative task, typical work, and a biography with a short reflection on their creative process.

Well, with a name like that, what would you expect?

One of the night shots really transport me to another masterpiece…Case Study #22 or the Koening House shot by the recently passed Julius Shulman. Cornerless glass windows, natural rock for wall surfaces, dark wood flooring and minimal use of furniture paired with a lap pool that looks and acts as a reflection surface. Nicely done.

A Kind Of Magic

Macro-photographs of light interference on soap bubbles.
An ongoing long term-project begun in 2005.
The photographs showcased here are part of a series titled “A Kind Of Magic” and are available as fine art limited edition prints.

How it’s made:
A flat soap film is made by dipping a wire frame into the soap bubble mixture.
The frame is held above a dark surface, and a studio light is aimed at the bubble. The camera is aimed so that the reflection of the light will be seen over the entire surface of the bubble, and a macro-photograph is taken of that reflection.

All images are created completely in the camera with minor contrast and saturation adjustments.

Giant Trucks Are No Longer Scary

The noisy, polluting, gas guzzling giants are being tamed to look more demure and sophisticated, and how! The Scania Concept that we see here is a pure reflection of this new theory and is a bid to change the perception that trucks are the big bullies of the highway. It is designed to be eco-friendly and economical by using a diesel-electric hybrid engine. The innovative part comes on the wheel-hub design that sports indicative color-coded LEDs that point out speeding and other rules broken.

Damien Poulain: Totem 49

Inspired by ancestral sculptures and religious fetishes, in Totem 49 designer Damien Poulain has reinterpreted the notion of the symbolic nature of the totem by creating forty- nine hand-painted totems from reclaimed wood. By approaching contemporary concepts including politics, design, fashion and society, Poulain has reworked the ideology of the totem within a framework to which we can relate.

Says Poulain: “My totems attempt to make solid, timeless objects from fleeting events of the 21st century, allowing for reflection on the colossal power of the image and the role of new tribes and mythology in our increasingly secular society.”

The totems will be presented in the Kemistry gallery to create an insightful and thought-provoking exhibition that questions the roles and position of our modern-day icons and the significance and influence they assert, from the Berlin Wall to Britney Spears’ shaved head.

To accompany the exhibition, Poulain has created giclée prints of the totems available for purchase as well as a book to accompany the exhibition, published by Kemistry Gallery Press. The totems are available for purchase as a collection.

The Puppet Show / Winkler+Noah

The Puppet Show, the new artistic project by the photographers Winkler+Noah. 30 portraits of children from two to eight years old, taken very naturally and transformed into dolls by a subtle play of retouching. The photo-symbol of the show, has already received two of the most important awards on the international photographic scene: American Photography of New York and publication in the volume “200 Best Photographers Worldwide” by Luerzers Archive.

An exhibit which becomes a starting point for reflection, sociological research and introspection,to better understand ourselves and the world around us. And to understand that the best present we can give to children is to let them be children. More information here and here

What The World Needs

The first attempt to make social responsibility a central issue in the work of designers was made in the 1960s. A group of British designers published a manifesto titled “First things first” that called for a reflective handling of communication reaching beyond pure sales support.

The superficial financial orientation of the sum of our actions and the lack of ethical lines has taken its toll. The cores of the global economy and society have been shaken, insecurity is spreading. Yet this vacuum offers space for counteraction, change and active reflection.

“What the world needs” is an appeal to all designers who think and act with a sense of social responsibility to formulate their concerns and ideas visually, to bring attention to important issues, encourage reflection, take a stand and present possible solutions.

The most exciting and engaging contributions will be selected by a panel of designers, politicians, philosophers and men and women of letters, and published in a full-page insert in the Austrian newspaper, “Die Presse am Sonntag.” All the entries will be presented on the wasbrauchtdiewelt.net Website and shown in an exhibition at a major creative industries institution in Vienna.

iSerendipity Lounge

iSerendipity is an ambient lounge that enhances mood, sociability and interactivity among people. Organic-shaped pods float amongst each other through space and light up once a person steps on. These pods detect the activity levels of people on each pod and drift through space, either isolating people for contemplative reflection or clustering active groups to enable chance encounters – serendipity. Pod lights are time- and context- sensitive: initial activation of a pod stimulates a glow that intensifies over time and colour hues change according to activity levels. The exterior façade displays the harmonious movement and colour intensity of each pod as aesthetic visual information to passersby.

My name is Andy J. Miller and I am an American illustrator currently living and working in the UK. I spent my childhood with pencil and crayon in hand and not much has changed. At the moment, I have my hands on many things: finishing my ‘Indie Rock Coloring Book’ for charity (published July ’09), co-running the Illustration house The Wizard’s Hat, and a steady diet of commercial and personal work on my own.

“All The Things”, an illustration inspired by the thing I am inspired by most, music. Layered like a crazy pop song with colours and patterns, it’s just a reflection of the type of songs I love to hear. It is now a tee for the great Palmercash.

The Order of Things

Exhibition on the uses of archival images, image archives and image banks, and various other manifestations of a classificatory, encyclopaedic impulse in contemporary art …
In The Order of Things, this image archive’s use of a stringent classificatory logic – alphabetical and thus eminently logical, yet also often bizarre in its ordering of one ‘class’ of images after another – operates as a curatorial trigger for a sustained reflection upon the various uses of archives, databases, encyclopaedias, typologies and other ‘ordering devices’ as methods and strategies for confronting the delirious spectacle of the contemporary image world …

Le point central de l’exposition est la banque d’images en tant que motif esthétique, méthode artistique et stratégie culturelle – les archives, l’atlas, l’encyclopédie et l’inventaire sont autant de manières de générer de l’ordre dans le déluge vertigineux d’images qui caractérise notre culture contemporaine de l’image. L’Internet, dans ses applications les plus voyeuristes et exhibitionnistes – flickr, google image search, youtube – fonctionne, non sans raison, comme une sorte d’horizon conceptuel sur lequel se détachent diverses œuvres d’art et pratiques artistiques. Leaky Roof Brightens Your Day

The art of lighting design is finding ways to articulate glaring light out over surfaces without inefficiently wasting too much of the lamp’s power. Daniel Becker accomplishes that in his “Melting Light” by hanging an LED packed ‘raindrop’ below a rippling plastic reflector. The brilliance of Daniel’s light is in the rippling shape; by spreading the otherwise harsh reflection out over three concentric circles, the glare and shadows are softened and become pleasing to the eye.

The good thing about fashion now is that it’s so broad and inclusive of self-expression that even when one edge is pushing at austerity chic, there are many other takes that are equally valid. One of them is Dries Van Noten’s. On his runway, the argument for multi-printed, many-textured dressing is upheld with such grace he almost makes it look easy. It goes without saying that Van Noten has been the go-to designer for lovers of arty-ethnic textiles and undemanding shapes for years, but now something more interesting is happening. Lately, his collections have shaken off the feeling of being a specialist refuge for anti-mainstream devotees. What Van Noten is showing—more streamlined shapes, longer lengths, loopy knits, furs, high heels—is a reflection of what he calls “dressing ‘up,’ but in a modern way.” more
