Jenny Dubanu is a realist portrait painter who’s work totally threw me for a loop. She works from photographs as reference, recreating them I would say fairly faithfully. She enjoys painting people in those in-between moments that only a camera can capture. When you look at the paintings you know that it came from a photograph, but her mastery of oil painting truly makes these stunning works of art. I wish I could do this!

Nucleo Design

Nucleo was created in 1997 by Piergiorgio Robino, Chief designer and owner of the studio, teacher for Domus Academy and IED.

Piergiorgio Robino invited Clemens Mueller, a young and highly talented designer from Dortmund (Germany) to contribute, with his own art, to Primitive (Nucleo’s new collection of furniture) Collection. Mueller has developed four photographs where white is stratified as a casting resin on his skin. The images interpret the process and energy of Primitive, as if in a human body the muscle and structure could be covered by a thin layer of resin, freezing the expression forever.

For the past 2 months I’ve been receiving these lovely postcards by Anna & Tess Knoebel at Abe’s Penny, an art and literature series.

The postcards form a kind of micro-zine. Each issue is a series of four postcards with a narrative that unfolds in sequence, one part per week. A combination of photographs and text, in the format of a traditional postcard. Temporary as this might seem the cards have a very collectible aesthetic, the cards vary each month, with a different artist and writer collaborating on each issue.

Every card I get put’s a smile on my face and is worth the subscription just for that!

From the press release:

Almost all of my images are entirely invented. I only use photographs or other source materials as reference (in most cases), the way a writer would use a dictionary. It’s my belief that invented images contain more nuanced information related to development. In addition, there’s a pure rush of excitement that comes from making an image that didn’t exist in the world before.

The winners of the myMarvin Architect’s Challenge are some really beautiful structures. The contest asked architects and designers to send in photographs of buildings that were creates with Marvin windows and doors. One of the winners was the Lamson-West Residence by John Senhauser Architects. The angles, ceiling structure, and stark contrast of front and rear elevations were some of the things that had me at “Hello”.

The Oxford Project

The Oxford Project began almost 25 years ago, when Peter Feldstein undertook the task of photographing every resident of his town, Oxford, Iowa (pop. 676). The collection of photographs that resulted is a fascinating glimpse into the ethos and character of small-town life.
