It’s a wooden log and a radio. That ain’t all folks. It’s also solar powered and if Mr. Sunshine isn’t happy that day, there’s a dynamo powered by your finger. I love the giant wooden rotary dials to change stations and volume. The old school retractable antenna nostalgically tugs at my heart too. Sure I have no idea what station I’m changing to but it looks like an ewok crafted it so I totally approve. BTW, 80% of the radio is oak. The rest are radio components. Treehuggers might like it… or will they hate it since it’s made from a tree? Hmmm

Abstract Mobile Designed by Rolly Crump

Ex-Disney designer Kevin Kidney posted these diagrams of an abstract mobile that was designed by old school Disney Imagineer Rolly Crump. First off, Rolly Crump is one of the most amazing names ever, and the fact that he was an Imagineer only makes this all better. Second, the instructions tell you exactly how to make this sweet mobile, with exact measurements of all parts. You could have your own modern mobile floating above your dining room table in no time with a little bit of 16 gauge wire and some light gauge sheet metal.

Oslo Graffiti 1984-2008

Oslo Graffiti 1984-2008 er en splitter ny bok som tar for seg en stor del av Oslos graffitihistorie. Boka har 300 sider fullstappa med bilder av gamle og nye, sette og usette godbiter. Fredag er det offisiell release på Telemark Kunstnersenter i Skien.

Pressemeldinga fra kunstnersenteret har detaljene om hvorfor dette er et møst i bokhylla:

Telemark Kunstnersenter er stolte av å presentere den første boken som samler dokumentasjon fra Oslos graffitiscene fra 1984-2008. Dette er en bok på 300 sider med billedmateriale fra mange av miljøets egne utøvere.

Boken gir oversikt over tidenes aktive graffitimalere samt et inntrykk av hvordan estetikken utviklet seg lokalt og hvilke referanser som kan spores gjennom deres uttrykk. Oslos graffitimiljø har siden begynnelsen på 90-tallet hatt en kjerne av writere som har opprettholdt aktivitet helt frem til i dag. Boken vil vise arbeider av old-school writere frem til vår tids unge utøvere.

Graffiti, slik denne boken presenterer det, handler om såkalt bombing (massiv tagging), throw-ups og større arbeider (såkalte piecer og burners), og skiller seg fra det ofte brukte begrepet “street art”, som gjerne består av plakat- og klistremerker og bruk av sjablong for detaljerte bilder og tekst. Boken vil presentere graffitiens ånd som noe midt i mellom hærverk og kreativt uttrykk, og som unike indivders selvrealisering og tydelige holdning mot samfunnets normaliserte og rigide orden.

Bokprosjektet er støttet av Norsk Kulturråd.

Telemark Kunstnersenter vil følge opp denne boken med en kontinuerlig visning av de to norske graffitivideoene “Grovt Skadeverk 1 & 2″ i videorommets neste periode, fra 7. november til 13. desember.

Super Mario Poker Chip Art

I’ve been playing with my poker chips all wrong! Cody van Tol of Canada must have come up with this idea when he had a large chip-stack playing Texas Hold ‘Em. Recreating scenes from our favorite old school video game, he uses different colored poker chips to create Mario and his fiendish enemies.

North Peak & Grizzly Peak Beers

Check out this great packaging design for Michigan based Northern United Brewing Company, who have some really great looking beers. The packaging design was created by Neatly Trimmed Beard, made to have “an old-timey log cabin vibe,” which I’m totally feeling. The overall aesthetic definitely reminds me of the midwestern vibe of the 50’s and 60’s cans (click here for some great old school beer cans) and the simplicity of the design with the bold colors really makes them pop.

Does anyone know if I can get these in Los Angeles or order them online?

Today, we follow Ashley Schönknecht, designer at Dwell Magazine, from San Francisco to Los Angeles for the 2009 Dwell on Design conference, held June 26-28, 2009 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Below, Ashley tells us about her experiences over a few days at the 2009 exhibit [which we were sadly unable to attend this year]. Let’s live vicariously through Ashley!

We flew Virgin America down to Los Angeles (we’re based in San Francisco) for our Dwell on Design event for which we’d been preparing over this past year.

VA is officially the only way to fly! The club-like lighting is so soothing. No clunky drink carts knocking your elbows as they squeeze down the aisle and the animated safety video is a really creative approach to an otherwise monotonous element of the flying experience. My coworkers and I seat-to-seat chatted the whole way. Old school AOL chat room style. Awesome.

My Little Notepad

Aversion to new fangled technology? Wanna keep it old school but modern and classy? Don’t I sound the an infomercial? If you said yes to all the above, check out this credit card size notepad. It uses foil and rubber to imprint whatever you write using an included stick but any blunt surface will do. If you’re not familiar with the old tech, the built-in slider brings it to a clean slate. I believe this is concept only.

Før swoosher, søtten farger, førti layers, 3d-med-skygge-med-skyline-med-ny-skygge og annen illustratorrunking fantes det amerikanske sportslag med fine profiler. Jeg brukte litt tid på denne siden og rotet frem noen old school-favoritter mens du var i parken og sola stumpen.

This is a traditional illustration rendered in photoshop CS2. My work is very comic oriented and usually has a lot of detail to make for a very engaging scene. I spend a lot of time working on my digital rendering to make a more painterly scene than the old school comic rendering that i learned by when working for Malibu and Marvel comics. This piece is a self promotional poster for my business name Social Deviant Culture.

Litt skamløs selvpromo er vel lov i ny og ne? Ja, joda, vi sier det sånn.

Ikveld er det TomTomKlubb på BLÅ, og undertegnede er blant de som skal spille litt musikk. De andre som lager fest er TomTomKlubbs egne Hele Fitta og Gaute Drevdal, samt Dalai Lamula!

Det blir old school-boogie fra 20.00 på uteserveringen, etterfulgt av litt mer festbasert musikk innendørs fra klokka 23.00 til seint! CC: 60,-!

Buddy Carr Skateboards

Antonio from Aisle One dropped us a line over a project he’s been working on. He told us, “I’ve collaborated with Buddy Carr Skateboards on a limited edition skateboard that’s [just been released]. I was contacted by the company to concept and design a skateboard that would exhibit a design not really found in the skate industry. Something typographic, minimal and beautiful. Buddy also wanted me to design the shape of the board so I went with something more old school and functional.” I don’t skate but, that’s quite nice is that. Be quick if you want one though - they’re limited to 100 pieces, and are $160 a piece.

Antonio Carusone collaborated with Buddy Carr Skateboards on a limited edition skateboard that was released this week. He was asked to concept and design a skateboard that would exhibit a design not really found in the skate industry. Something typographic, minimal and beautiful. Antonio also got to design the shape of the board and went with something more old school and functional.

Selective Insulation

“Selective Insulation” is a project by the architects Davidson Rafailidis. They developed this small study as a room in a room, which is in a big difficult to heat, old school building. The shape is defined by a few parameters: the daylight conditions, 2 people need a minimum of 4m² desk-related office space and they wanted to have desk, a window and a way to enter/exit. The whole framework is quite simple and wrapped with an insulating layer of double-ply bubblewrap.

Reminisscent of the golden days of modernist design, some of the work reminds me of some of the old school design publications of that period

Moderat - Rusty Nails

This music video for Rusty Naily by Moderat fits perfectly to my last post about the photography of William Hundley. Last night was actually the record release party at WMF in Berlin and it was quite hot. I didn’t know the support act Anstam before, but I really liked them. It’s almost impossible to find anything on these 2 German brothers, you can listen to their tracks on MySpace. Dark!

The record label BPitchControl took down the video, apparently they are still quite old school.

CLE USB Keys

I seriously meet the most interesting people on Twitter. Take for example Alissia Melka-Teichroew (say that 5 times fast), an amazing designer working out of Brooklyn who has her own brand called byAMT. She’s got this really incredible array of products she’s designed, from rings, to log-shaped stools, to glassware… the girl is epic.

One thing that caught my eye was her CLE USB Key. The key mimics those old school, Victorian era keys that everyone on earth loves. It’s such a simple and fun idea, much like all the rest of her work.
