We Are Golden

Golden are a new agency born from ex-tdr staff Rob Brearley and Steve McKevitt and ex-Love member Francis Carolan based in Leeds. Still fresh on their feet than managed to do pretty well bringing in some big name clients like Nike, Harvey Nics and Lurpak—for whom they designed a new typeface Lurpak Sans. Golden’s website is a little bare for our liking at the moment but we’re excited to see how they develop over the next 12 months. Expect to see some polished work from this Northern trio.

In December 2008, Levi's ditched its old ad agency and signed on with Wieden + Kennedy (the talented ad makers responsible for creating many of Nike's epic, stirring, one-minute anthems). The spots that W+K came up with—this new campaign is labeled "Go Forth"—have been running since the summer in movie theaters and, increasingly, on television. From the moment we see that "America" sign half-sunk in inky water, we know we're watching something new. The campaign inhabits a different universe from the one depicted in "Live Unbuttoned."

And there's logic to this match between a quintessentially American poet and a quintessentially American product. Whitman's verse allows Levi's to evoke not only its proud history but a forward-looking present—the pioneering, American mindset that Whitman captured and that Levi's hopes to embody.

The Selby + Nike

Some images from the worktha THE SELBY has been doing for Nike 6.0 the past few months. He traveled to Tahiti, Georgia, Florida, NJ and Brooklyn to shoot some of Nike 6.0’s top athletes in their environments. His photos, watercolor paintings, videos and written question and answers are being used on Nike 6.0’s ad campaign as well as on the Nike 6.0 website. He says” This project has been so much fun to work on! Thanks Nike!” COOL as always

Nike LunarGlide+ Review

Nike is renowned the world over for their running shoes so when the LunarGlide+ racked up award after award for product design, I got interested. I’ve never been a runner so this was a golden opportunity to get my feet wet. Thanks so much to Kasey and Demetria for hooking up the sneaks. Hit the jump for my review.

One of the key features of the LunarGlide+ is the cushioning support Nike calls Dynamic Support System. The tech comprises of Nike’s ultra cushy LunarLite foam core providing support for both neutral and pronate runners. The “+” denotation indicates compatibility with the Nike+ iPod kit.

With my textile background, I easily recognized the tried-and-true materials of choice for footwear. Mesh uppers and microfiber layers provide exceptional support and are incredibly breathable. They also stretch quite a bit since feet tend to expand once the pavement pounding starts. The rear outsole is made of hard rubber which is perfect for me since I overpronate. The outside corners of my shoes always wear out first so it’s nice to see Nike has mastered this aspect without weighing down the shoe. The LunarGlide+ weighs a scant 10.6 oz.

I took out a whole month to use the shoe. It doesn’t come with the Nike+ iPod kit but a quick visit to the Apple store and a fresh pair of crew socks and I was ready to go. It is extremely comfortable, like air and with every step I felt some artificial spring. At times it gave me the forward momentum I needed while simultaneously cushioning my feet. If I didn’t know better I’d swear there was some sort of gel pad in there but no, it’s the LunarLite foam. It does it job very well.

That’s the real key behind all the accolades. It’s extremely lightweight, encompasses the latest Nike tech, combines great design and priced right in the middle of Nike’s range. In my month of everyday use, the shoe still looks new. The inner and outsole are intact and the foam cushioning hasn’t deteriorated one bit. At $100 it’s a bargain. I have continued to run even after my review. The shoe has converted me so that’s one more accolade the LunarGlide+ can add to the trophy cabinet.

Tongue n’Cheek

I’ve been a fan of the (typographic) design work Ben Drury does for seminal UK hip hopper Dizzee Rascal since 2007’s Maths+English caught my eye. The latest effort for Dizzee’s forthcoming Tongue n’Cheek release doesn’t disappoint. What’s more, the two have worked together on the design of some interesting—though possibly not to everyone’s taste—limited edition Nike Air Max sneakers. I particularly like the translation of the album’s ‘tongue’ bubble lettering into the embroidered areas of the shoes’ tongues. (See what they did there!)

Interested to know what others think—would any of you wear these? Even if you wouldn’t, you’d have to admit the promo video for the sneaks is pretty cool!

*If anyone finds a web link to a current website for Ben Drury’s design work, feel free to share it. I could only find a couple of blogs and a site for an exhibition back in 2001. Cheers.

I was trying to figure out if this was digital image in the background. Based on the notes from this art installation entitled “Atomic: full of love, full of wonder” by Nike Savvas, it was made using materials such as polystyrene, nylon wire, paint, and electric fans.

New Work from Kustaa Saksi

I posted about Amsterdam based designer Kustaa Saksi some time ago, and since then he’s been quite busy. He just updated his site with a ton of new work. He had an exhibit at the Nike showroom in London, worked with Issey Miyake in Paris, created a set of plates and a wallpaper for Domestic (which you can see above) and even had a book of his artwork published. What’s amazing is that his work seems to be getting brighter and brighter as he goes. Definitely take a peak at his new site, eye-candy doesn’t begin to describe it.

I always wondered who came up with a lot of Nike’s branding, I thought it was mostly in-house, but as it turns out several awesome projects were conceived by Brian Schmitt. Brian is a freelance art director and designer living in Amsterdam and creating a ton of amazing projects. My personal favorite is The Cortez Brothers projcet, which are a pair of cute characters he created with Tokyo Plastic for the launch of the 2009 Cortez. They looks so mysterious and cool. I also loved the wall of shoes he did for the US Olympic Basketball Team, it’s so epic looking.

Nike: Kustaa Saksi Installation in London

Nike commissioned Finland-born artist Kustaa Saksi to create an installation for 1948, Nike’s store/gallery/meeting place in Shoreditch, London. The installation recount the history of the brand’s running shoes. Colors and design are amazing!

Nike Cardboard Packaging

Zack Klauck and Emile Molin were asked by Nike to design packaging system that reflects their desire for lightness and sustainability during the Nike exhibition in Beijing last year. They decided to use a mesh wrap of recycled cardboard to make a packaging for a shirt and windbreaker together and one for a pair of shoes. I really like how they look and the fact that they wrote the sizes by hand. But I don’t really get why you would need a packaging for a shirt and windbreaker, except if there’re really limited gifts.

Nike SB HD Video Project Debacle

STAGES

STAGES is exhibition initiated by Lance Armstrong and Nike to raise funds and awareness for the fight against cancer. 20 renowned artists produced work inspired by Lance and his fight against cancer. Although I’m very sceptical about the whole cycling sport (or any professional sport for that matter), the cause and the artwork deserve some publicity. The exhibition opens this Friday July 17th at Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin in Paris, France.
