Despite laws, ‘pixações’ have invaded São Paulo. A true calligraphic shock, that has caused a deep aesthetic transformation of the city. Through more than 125 photos taken at the core of the Brazilian megalopolis as well as a detailed analysis of the phenomenon, ‘São Paulo Signature’ deciphers for the very first time an unparalleled graphic universe, strictly reserved to initiates before today.

‘Pixadores have coined a gestural written language all their own, using the buildings of São Paulo as veritable signboards for their messages. The astute analysis which is expanded upon in this volume, opened my myopic eyes to a system of writing and ethic of creation that rises above even the most high-spirited and emblematic American graffiti. For residents of São Paulo it may contribute to blight, but in its massiveness it is an urban wonder’.
(extracted from the foreword by Steven Heller | author, critic, New York Times senior art director)

Sunday Times

Below are a selection of covers and spreads from The Sunday Times Magazine. The most famous being Don McCullin's Viet Cong piece. Rick Poynor writes about The devaluation of photography in magazines in EYE74 stating that it just isn't what it used to be. This is also mirrored in the recent New York Times piece which talks about war photography then and now. I think the below pages illustrate a time when imagery thrived.

Spike Jonze Visits Geoff McFetridge

Spike Jonze recently took a trip to Geoff McFetridge’s studio and he took some photos while he was there and put them on his blog, We Love You So. These guys are two of my favorite creative people on the planet, so I get all nerdy when I see stuff like this. I love the image he took of the sketch above. It’s labeled as Chicago Art Insitute, and inside it is a giant head, with a detached body outside of it. Then it shows that the head would also have a door that you could go inside… um, can someone please make this a possibility?! But instead of Chicago it should be in Los Angeles. You can check out more of the photos by clicking here.

There’s also a great article in The New York Times (which Geoff did the graphics for the article) that talks about Where The Wild Things Are and has a nice little interview as well. I enjoyed this description of how the studio was dealing with Spike’s version of the movie:

In Sendak’s “Where the Wild Things Are,” a child hammers some nails into a wall, is sent to his room without any supper and finds solace and wild fun on an island of monsters who pronounce him king. Considering Jonze’s own propensity toward mischief, it was tempting to see his fight with the studio (which, by the time I sat down with him, was more than a year old) as an embodiment of the eternal struggle between freedom-seeking child and authoritarian parent. Jonze chose a different family metaphor. “It’s like the studio was expecting a boy, and I gave birth to a girl,” he told me. “And now they’re learning to love and accept their daughter.”

Click here to read the rest of the article.

Friday Five with Melanie Carlson of Lushpad

Melanie Carlson is the founder of lushpad.com, an online marketplace for used designer and mid-century modern furniture and art, and self admitted design enthusiast. Currently residing in Vancouver in a completely renovated “Vancouver Special”, she and partner Jeff Macpherson of Tiki Bar TV look forward to the day they can build their own modernist home.

Today, Melanie’s rounding up her five favorite pieces of architecture from around the world. Can you guess what they are before the jump?

1. The Stahl House
The Stahl House is one my Number 1 favorite piece of architecture, and I’ve visited it many times. The Stahl House, or Case Study House #22, was built in 1959 by Pierre Koenig for the Stahl family and made famous by photographer Julius Schulman.

The house is positioned on the side of an hill which gives it an unobstructed view of Los Angeles -– a particularly gorgeous view in the evening with plum colored sky and the faint orange glow from the city lights.

2. Kaufman House
The Kaufman House was designed by renowned architect Richard Neutra in 1946. I love this house because despite it’s harsh angular lines it blends beautifully with the Desert environment. The large pool mirroring the sky and desertscape and feels like it almost folds its surroundings in on itself.

Despite the home being lauded as one of the most significant examples of International Style architecture in North America, the home has gone through many hands and some not-so-well thought-out renovations, however the last owner, and Architectural Historian, painstakingly restored it to its original glory. [Image source: New York Times]

3. Curtain Wall House
The same thing that draws me to the clean lines of mid-century modernism is the same thing that draws me to the beautiful simplicity of Japanese design. Architect Shigeru Ban’s Curtain Wall House built in Tokyo, Japan is in my mind a ground-breaking piece of architecture. By eliminating outer walls, the house’s temperature can be controlled by opening or closing the giant 2-story curtains that wraps the entire building thereby creating natural air conditioning. This is not a new idea by any means – the Japanese have been using shoji screens this way for centuries, but Shigeru’s take on it is literally breathtaking.

4. LV Series Prefab
Growing up in Scotland, I had a certain idea in my head of what a prefab house looks like. After WWII thousands of tiny bunglalow prefabs went up all over the UK. These were of course looked down upon at the time because of their non-traditional materials and the speed at which they were built. I have to admit that preconception about the humble prefab lingered with me until I saw Rocio Romero’s modern take on it. I love the proportions and clean minimalist lines of the LV series. A no-apologies modernist piece of architecture, the rawness of the materials is a pleasing contrast to the natural setting I’ve always imagined it being placed in.

Romero’s prefab celebrates what is so great about modernism – simple, efficient, modular – which is perhaps is why it works so well set with mid-century modern furniture.

5. Smith House
The Gordon Smith House designed by the late Arthur Erickson is in my opinion one of the most beautiful examples of Canadian West Coast Modernism. Designed in 1964 for artist Gordon Smith, the home makes liberal use of glass and cedar wood with its post and beam style. This is one of the first residential homes said to be greatly influenced by Erickson’s trip to Japan.

Yet another example of how modernism can be at one with its environment, and why its my favorite architectural style.

Thanks, Melanie!

You got your first job as an art director at a magazine at the age of 19. Can you tell me how that opportunity came about and what attracted you to the job?

I was in my final year of University in Perth, part of the course was that we had to find ourselves a 'Mentor', someone in the field that we were interested in. The prerequisite was that we would see them once a week and show them our work to get critiqued on. I chose a new magazine from Perth called REVelation Magazine. It was the only youth culture magazine coming out of Australia at the time, and by the end of my University year the publisher asked me if I wanted to try to art direct an issue and I stayed there for 3 years.

Art directing requires the ability to have a big picture view counterbalanced by a strict attention to detail. When and how do you think you developed an eye for this type of work?

I've learned everything from just working. I am still learning! Each project is so different, art directing a magazine is different to art directing a catalog or lookbook or book, each client is different too obviously. I do think I approach my projects in a unique way as I am an art director as well as an illustrator/artist, so I look at page almost as an image.

You're a multi-disciplined artist, working in typography, illustration, collage, etc. -- how do you decide what medium to work in for any given project?

I'm a Transitionist – a working designer and artist. Though, the medium of my work is usualy dictated by the project/client. Sometimes I get to do a combination of art direction/type/illustration, but mostly it is separate projects. Each medium that I work in continues to inform the style of the other mediums though.

One of the mediums you do a great deal of work in is t-shirts. How is conceiving a design for a t-shirt different than say, 2-D work?

It is still an illustration and piece of art, the only restrictions often come in the limited palette of colors that some brands may use.

Neomu is a great zine. Can you tell me when you founded the publication and what inspired its creation?

It was founded in 2000, I had moved to New York and closed up the magazine 'Mu' that I used to publish from Australia. I missed publishing, I was still in touch with my contributors, and I was frustrated with overpriced design books and magazines. I wanted to create something that was free and good, so in the end Neomu was priced at $1 in each country's currency but I gave the copies to stores for free and they donated the proceeds to charities. I published 8 issues completely out of my own pocket until the last issue in 2005. I would still like to do a couple more issues but the time hasn't been right yet. I like that illustration trends continue to change and I think the next issue, whenever that may be, will be a really interesting departure from the last issue.

Back in 2005, you released your first book, Mushroom Girls Virus, which has a tagline that reads: "A guide to the identification and study of our commoner fungi with special emphasis on the edible varieties." How did the idea for the book come about?

I was commissioned to do a psychedelic and bohemian inspired illustration for a client and I loved how that turned out so I did a few more and then I started to get loads of commissions for more and more in the same style over a couple of years. A lot of the work hadn't been widely seen and also I was feeling like the style – which was girls and mushrooms – was getting a bit old, so I decided to publish it all in a book and be done with that style and move on. A publisher had approached me about my interest to doing a book and it felt right at the time.

What projects are you currently working on -- and what has you really excited right now in your world?

I'm curating the new issue of Theme Magazine with Chris Rubino, the issue is about Transitionists. I'm working on some patterns for textiles; making new drawings for a show I have in January in Sydney at the Monster Children Gallery; putting together work for a group show at the California State University, Fullerton, Art Gallery in August; also putting together work for a Gap Pop-up store exhibition later this month... along with working on a few other small design projects and publications.

Play Me, I’m Yours

I was reading this article in The New York Times the other day called All Around London, an Invitation to Make Music, which talks about a program by Luke Jerram who takes pianos and puts them into busy, cultural areas across the world. The idea is that people will stop and play music for anyone who cares to listen, creating a (hopefully) pleasurable experience for not only the player, but the listeners as well. Luke calls this program, Play Me, I’m Your’s.

For some reason this article made me really emotional. I don’t know what it is, but there’s something really gets me about people being united by music. Music is a universal thing no matter what language you speak, we all understand. And there’s just something so random and wonderful about this project that makes me just want to grin from ear to ear.

For example, they did a version of this in São Paolo, where the article says that pianos are scarce. I guess people caught wind of the project and travelled for hours to get a chance to play on these public pianos. Just the thought of that makes me burst inside. How wonderful would it be to walking around and suddenly you see and hear a 9 year old boy playing Chopin? If this intrigues you, watch the video above. Just listening to it gives me chills.

GHOSTSHRIMP

Ghost shrimp are these tiny little transparent shrimps that are supposed to be good at keeping fish tanks clean. These guys are totally unrelated to Dan James, who also happens to work under the moniker, GHOSTSHRIMP. Dan is a 28 year old illustrator who’s worked for companies like Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network, as well as doing a ton of band illustartions and worked for the New York Times as well.

It’s hard to sum up what Dan’s work is like, though I want to say weird and slight effed up. I mean those descriptions as a complete compliment. I love people who can draw weird shit and make it look brilliant. His style also looks slightly inspired by wood block printing, which is kind of interesting as well. Definitely have a looksie at his portfolios, he’s got a ton of great work to check out.

Fogelson-Lubliner is the studio name of Gary and Phil, two really great designers that finally got a website up. It had been a long time coming, and shit sure don’t disappoint. Here’s what you can start with: one of a few things for Good, one of a few things for Emeco, & some recent things for The New York Times. I am going to hold off on sharing some compromising anecdotal stories about Gary and Phil, but feel free to share your own in the comments section.

They will be taking part in this year’s NYC Zine Fest in Brooklyn this weekend as The Holster collective. Go check that out for sure. They will be doing a zine-on-demand situation that some AMAZING people contributed to. Not naming names!

Each December, the last issue of New York Times magazine is dedicated to the people who passed away during the year. For the 2008 issue, art director Nancy Harris Rouemy commissioned Canada Type’s Patrick Griffin to design a new typeface especially for that project. Based on ideas found in the foundry’s Jezebel and Treasury typefaces, Memoriam decidedly takes a more luxurious approach, tapping into an elegant and contrast-rich brand of poster calligraphy.
Steven M. Johnson

Here is the work of inventor/author/cartoonist/former urban planner Steven M. Johnson.

His mental process :" Mix-’N-Match, outrageous extrapolation, speeded-up thinking, random/lateral thinking (which comes close to the hypnagogic state between waking and sleep where some claim inspired inventions and scientific inventions come through), and so forth."

“If I could use two words to describe what it is that I enjoy it is that I love to be sneakily outrageous . . ."

Every single day, I’m seeing more and more amazing and talented people coming from Australia or New Zealand. Jeffery Docherty is not a difference. The talented pal is currenty living in NYC and he got the opportunity to work with brands like i-D, New York Times and Visionaire/V Magazine.

RAYOGRAM NEWS

Great interface that allows you to browse the front pages of the worlds’ major newspapers and download a readable version. Also, as noted here in the studio that the New York Times design is bizarre.
