Art Deco Goes Green

I love when past design sensibilities turn out to be more than aesthetic fluff when combined with modern knowledge. Such is the case with the art deco movement. “Doh” unapologetically rehashes the streamline and symmetric lines of automobiles from the 30’s - a time when aerodynamics became the “in” thing. The vehicle is sleek like a pearl, slippery looking like a fish and is laced with more gadgets than you can count.

Neuro-technology embedded into the seats eliminate unnecessary buttons and controls. The seats are separated by the upper and lower parts, attached to the roof and floor deck which hides a storage place. The entry/exit of the vehicle is an event where the seat swings to the outside for ease and that all important photo-op.

So where does the green part come in? Why the use of lightweight and sustainable materials of course. The designer doesn’t go into detail but he does mention extensive use of recycled glass and components. His argument is art deco was about minimizing just as it was about decadence. While automobiles of later decades became ornate exercises in ego, art deco stayed true to what a car should be - sleek and efficient thus requiring less energy to manufacture and drive.

Andy Fish & Veronica Hebard Spotlighted in ARTScope Magazine!

This exhibition provides an up-to-the-moment look into the lives of husband and wife team Veronica Hebard and Andy Fish — indeed, during my visit to their studio, some of the paint on their work was still wet and toy figures politely waited to come to life. It’s to their credit that in a house filled with artifacts representing the entire history of horror and illustrated comics, my attention was 100 percent on their work.

Graphic novelist, cartoonist, painter and illustrator Fish has already earned himself a permanent place in American culture as a D.C. Comics freelancer, having drawn a number of “Batman” issues. This exhibition features 30 pages from his in-progress, 200 page graphic novel, “Harker: The Legend of Dracula”.

SPACE 242 is Boston’s Low Brow High Hip Art Gallery in the South End– located at 242 East Berkeley Street on the corner with Harrison Avenue– and tonights opening features ATOMIC HEARTS & THE ELECTRICAL BRAIN featuring the Dynamic Duo of Andy Fish & Veronica Hebard with special guest artists Lindsay Small & Allison Bamford! The opening reception is from 6-8pm and reservations are requested on the website.

This will be a fun and exciting show of some really amazing POP ART!

Ku*Chi*Ku Battles the Giant Glorper
Currently working on a new series of images for an upcoming gallery show at Space 242 in Boston, MA. The theme is a play on little girls in costumes kicking giant monster butt and still being adorable (yet a bit terrifying) in the process.

Looking forward to working with friends and mentors Andy Fish, Veronica Hebard, and Lindsay Small in this show.

-Joe Vollan ( a Seattle based artist ) art is actually exposed at Upper playground Seattle,I discovered it by surprised and i love it. his Steam Punk style mixed with robotic style fish and flowers is just awesome, hi slatest painting is a space needle one ( the Emblem of the emerald city) and Upper playground edited it on T shirt. sweeeet.

Emerson College Honors Graphic Novels by Andy Fish

Boston’s Emerson College honored faculty who have been published in the previous year on Wednesday March 25th, 2009. Among those honored were Cartoonist and Graphic Novelist Andy Fish. This is the first time Emerson has featured Graphic Novels in this event, and Fish’s Fly: A True Story Completely Made Up and The Tragic Tale of Turkey Boy were among the honorees.

Fish’s graphic novels are gaining some serious notice and critical acclaim with one reviewer saying Fish is throwing some “serious heat” in the Eisner Award Contention.

Barcelona-based illustrator Iván Bravo, amongst other work, is inaugurating a very big and very colourful mural in a bar in Barcelona called Icasual.

Ivan describes the mural to us, “You are sitting down having a snack in a bar. Suddenly, a penguin passes by swiftly, looking at his watch (”tic-tac”), carrying a fish in his suitcase. In the background, a family of UFOs at the pedestrian crossing, while a zeppelin raises to admire the scene. Smoking cubes that resign from their positions, fish, fetishist monsters, tango, left feet, more fish, noses that migrate to the countryside, and lots of water for so many fish swimming around!. Without further notice, while holding your beer, you are part of the scenery. You are inside the Icasual Mural!”

Created for the French language daily La Presse (Montreal, Quebec), this illustration accompanied an article in last Sunday’s edition about letting kids do their own thing during Spring break. Too often children are pushed into tightly scheduled activities leaving no room to relax or to play or just to sleep in. The kids are symbolised by characters inspired by modern plush toys. I also love fishing all year round and couldn’t resist including fish in the art. Can you see them? The headline goes into the top left corner and the article runs down in one column on the left side.

Hot Pebbles for Cold Fish

Use the ancient power of water-smoothed rocks with the stone-grill concept “Pebbles.” It will make your healthy fish-devouring ways a cinch! As you can see, the body of the grill is flexible and easy to clean. Small so it’s portable, suited to indoor or outdoor use. It produces no harmful by-products, and is easy to operate.

The pebble for activation and temperature also lights the rest of the pebbles showing that the heat is activated. Once the grilling is done, just give the control pebble a “tug” -and it’s done!

Barramundi - The Next Big Fish

Sustainable seafood is taking the world by storm (there’s even a new mobile phone app. dedicated to smart sushi menu ordering!) and Australis Aquaculture’s barramundi answers all our fish prayers – it’s seriously delicious (served at the white table cloth foodie meccas such as the French Laundry), it’s good for you (hello, Omega 3’s), and they have pioneered eco-friendly fish farming (the photo is their revolutionary closed-containment, low-waste facility in Massachusetts) so farmed fish is no longer an eco-faux pas.

I went down to DreamSpace last night for an illustration show called ‘This Tiny Wolrd’. Work from four fantastic young artists including new work from Sarah Fotheringham, Hannah Waldron and Claire Scully.

Also on show is some new creations from Jim Stoten. To see someone already at the top of their game pushing their work even further shows some real bravery, and the rewards are there for all to see.

Collages with fish, horses, birds, James Bond and his usual brand of detailed pen drawing, but there’s no way of doing them justice with words alone, they need to be viewed, so if you’re in the area go and see them.

Listed in PREVIEWS Catalog this month (Oct), which is the comics industry catalog of choice, is FLY; A TRUE STORY COMPLETELY MADE UP– Artist Andy Fish’s second 100+ page graphic novel of 2008. THE TRAGIC TALE OF TURKEY BOY; AN AMERICAN LOVE STORY was released at the beginning of the summer.

The story is about a young man who dreams of flying and along the way he encounters true love, treachery, revenge and possibly even murder–all mixed in with some dark humor.

From 2004 to 2006 Riitta Ikonen mailed around 100 postcards to Margaret Huber. “Hair, fish, a sachet of white powder, a piece of broken record etc. were sent to test the postal system. Only three cards never reached their destination.”

Hey, it’s Wednesday already! I’m also feeling under the weather today, I think I’ve caught a bit of a cold, so my wit factor has been taken down a notch, I know, lame. Anyhow, this week’s DWP contributor was one of those people who I went out on a limb when I wrote him, thinking there would be nooooo way he’d do it, but as you can see he totally pulled through. This week’s artist is a guy named Tessar Lo, who was born in Indonesia, graduated from the Sheridan Institute in illustration and now calls Los Angeles his home.

I fell in love with Tessar’s work as soon as I saw it. His line work looks so flawless, his colors are spot are well chosen and i love how ethereal it all is, especially this week’s wallpaper. I think it’s so rad that he was able to merge women, water, plants, fish AND black foxes all into one beautiful little swirl. When I opened this up in my inbox my obvious reaction was, “holy shit.” I hope you guys enjoy it all as much as I do!
