Rocklen’s practice is one of discovery by means of scavenging, searching, finding or inheriting objects that by way of their pasts and inherent formal qualities possess powerful psychic and poetic potential. After the initial introduction to the object, Rocklen’s process takes any direction it needs to preserve the physical and emotional integrity of the original while pushing it into the meta-object status of fine art and imbuing it with an aura that transcends it’s inanimate nature.
Conceived as a counterpoint to his recent solo exhibition in New York, which Rocklen describes as ‘the temple,’ House of Return unites found objects and old carpet to create the mental and physical space of the domestic. Consisting of a home’s essential components–a place to sleep, a dish to eat from, something to wear, and a window to look through–House of Return presents a distilled, haunting, and enigmatic portrait of the dwelling.

Three for one, that’s how I look at the nifty Trinity Dish. The holidays are near so I’m all for anything that promises less prep and cleanup. They’re two much for these two little hands! The Trinity Dish unfolds into, count ‘em - one, two, three dishes offering guests bite sized goodies. Take a taste! The oddities we’ve had here at Yanko are some to throw you for a twist, and this is no exception! No exception at all! Pour yourself a glass of the old Winyard with the milk can, or dip yourself some savory flavor with the oil platter! Shovel yourself some salt with the cellar or dump some vinegar on your dish with the flask!

These are all bits and pieces from the porcelain tableware set designed by Aldo Bakker. Take a peek at the exquisite handiwork crafted into each piece. Each piece so simple, each piece so very unique.

Only in this set would the water carafe of such a caliber look so very normal. It looks downright average compared to the pipe-like milk can!

Philips Food Design Probes

Food Design Probes is a research project by Philips. They developed ideas how we will eat and source our food in the future, like in 15 to 20 years. There are 3 products we might have in our homes by then:

The Nutrition Monitor. It basically has 3 parts, a sensor which you have to swallow, a scanner which can measure the nutritional value of food and a display device. So you’ll exactly know what your body needs and what kind of effect your food will have on it.

The Food Printer. Remember the 3D sugar printer? Well, this is the next generation. The machine brings molecular gastronomy to your kitchen. “Feed” is with some ingredients, pick a shape, let it print … and voilà your amazing 3D dish is ready. I can’t wait to see all the opensource 3D recipes that will be available!

Biosphere Home Farm. It’s a 21st century aquarium crossed with stylish shelving unit, it contains fish, plants and other mini ecosystems.

Carved From A Block of Chrome

Here are two products destined for production. The Chiseled and U-Turn faucet concepts come to us by way of Design Jordan. I love the contrast between the abrupt sharpness and the organic nature of water. Too often I see these esoteric faucet designs that look stunning on their own but would look terrible in most homes. These concepts are what I call reachably futuristic.

The “Chiseled” concept is the first of a high-end bathroom/kitchen faucet range designed as if carved out of a block of chrome. The wide base, extended neck and rear-mounted handle provides a dynamic profile reinforcing the stealth-inspired sharp edges and flat facets.

The “U-Turn” concept is a high-end bathroom & kitchen faucet range designed around user need, incorporating bathroom items or providing additional features for personal objects. The bathroom sink model provides a recess to safely place rings while washing hands. The multi-purpose “U-turn” features a precast opening to place toothbrushes or other accessories like a customized liquid-soap dispenser.
The larger kitchen model includes an easy-access removable soap/sponge dish mounted on a rotating spout. The “U-turn” tip provides grooves to hang gloves, a watch or other personal accessories.

Would you buy one? They’re supposed to hit the international market… now.

In WWII, when American soldiers were asked by journalist why they were going to war the standard response was “for Mom and apple pie”.

For some reason the dish of apple pie worked its way into the American consciousness as a representative of all that was wholesome and good about the nation; a reminder of comfort and innocence. Which eventually made it great fodder for those subversives keen to test another American ideal: freedom of speech.

What the Pho?

What is Pho? Pho is food. Pho is: “Phở (fuh) n.Traditional Vietnamese beef noodle soup. Enjoy it for breakfast, lunch or dinner.” Find out more from, where else, Pho Fever! Now that you know what’s up, you’ve also got to know that our head editor Long Tran is master of Pho. Pho master Long has allowed his approval of this particular Pho design befo’ it’s even in his hands! That means it’s Photastic.

Omid sadri has designed a Pho tableware set just for the making and serving of Pho. Inspired by the form of a classical Vietnamese lantern, the bowl set here is designed to “simplify and enrich” the experience of the famous Vietnamese dish.

The bowl set makes the entire Pho dish easy to carry, then creates a unique experience by revealing the dish layer by layer.

My stomach agrees with this design.

Dinner parties and official gatherings are a time to mingle and do some serious networking. In such situations many of us (greedy/hungry) people have to give the yummy hors d’oeuvres and appetizers a miss, so that we don’t come across as awkward and messy. You know the scene: glass of wine in one hand and a plate full of goodies in the other! Mantara is the ideal solution for such social situations. It looks stylish and has a groove to hold your wine glass, a niche to secure the spoon/fork and the dish holds the appropriate proportion of food. Really Smart eh? Can you recall all your recipes by heart; tell me exactly how many calories are there in the dish that you are preparing; the amount of protein, cholesterol in it; are the ingredients fresh enough? NO!! NO!! You’re not a SMART Chef then. Actually you never can be, coz then you’d be this computer with an intelligent cutting board and integrated scale. The wise guy here can connect with local farmers and farmer’s markets to help you procure the seasonal produce. It can even help you share recipes, formulate diet plans etc. The unit is made up of a bamboo surfaced cutting board element containing the SmartChef’s computing and food scanning hardware, while a portable touch-screen tablet provides a kitchen-safe interface that can travel throughout the kitchen and home.

Technology has invaded our kitchens and smart refrigerators and ovens are a proof of it. Envisioning a smart cutting board is not too far fetched, it’s just the question of us accepting and getting used to it. I know there are several issues that need to be addressed, like juices that come out of the veggies that we cut and how will an electronic board tackle that. With such similar issues resolved, I’m sure some Smart company will see the potential and come up with the apt board.

Lunch Box Tray Transformer

Who wouldn’t enjoy an elaborate lunch, but to cook and carry a feast to work or school is next to impossible. Alright, even if you cook the hearty meal, how will you carry it? Spills, space, boxes…oh such a pain! Fret not; the new superhero of lunch service is here. Sunch! The lunchbox that does a transformer stunt and converts into a tray with an array of dishes to feast from. Impromptu picnic during lunch hour at work? Sunch will take care of the lack of picnic tables in the vicinity. Just open it up and arrange the tray across your lap and enjoy your meal!

When each side of the outer box is opened, they flatten out to become a table. Ring shaped slots at the bottom of each dish, container and bottle ensure they don’t topple over the table.
Basically a very Stable Table!

Spicy Hot Book

Jamie Oliver, Gordon Ramsay, Anthony Bourdain; all my favorite men will agree with me when I say that it’s the spices that you add to the cooking that make or break the dish. Like most Asians, my kitchen too is stocked up with a variety of spices and I really miss my collection when I’m on vacation, cooking in my holiday-home kitchenette. Anyways, my point is that packing the spices is always a bother, which is why I leave most of them at home, but looks like with the MUJI taste-leaf book I won’t have to compromise on flavors anymore.

This wonderful book actually contains sheets that are embedded with spices. Traditionally we chop and store the flavorings in jars, but this is kinda like the soap-strip! Tear it and use it.

Need some pepper? Just tear out the perforated page and add it to the dish! Edible quality paper embedded with the spice dissolve into the food, adding the much needed flavoring. The moisture and heat ensure that the spices mix in well.

MUJI is a perfect solution for cooking enthusiasts who travel or folks low on kitchen storage space.

In the middle of the jungle…concrete jungle, camping, boardroom….bedroom…nawws, let’s leave bedroom out of this! And I’m not talking about taking a leak! The BIG JOB, where?… in a portable paper toilet; of course! Peel the cover, assemble the “Dish”, squat and do your job, then let the soil and coal ash do its job (solidifies your waste), fold, seal and dispose! Super! Now you can down more burgers, pizzas, whatever! Oh and do wash your hands after wiping your butt!

The Story About Drying Dishes

Many of you must be accustomed to a dishwasher but a better part of the world still hand washes the dishes. They either towel dries them or puts them up in racks for air drying. No doubt air-drying is a better method and to max this is the Trio Dish Drier. What’s special about this one, is that it’s got these cute little containers at the bottom of the rack that houses herbs. Essentially, the residual water from the washed dishes trickles down to the plants to water them. Nice!

Not All Who Condiment Are Lost

For truly, it is the one who seeks “Balance,” the salt and pepper shaker stack, that finds their food seasoned just right. And on top of that, (or should I say beneath it,) a dish for gravy, sauce, or sugar. Or whatever else you need. Find this set in the home of the feng shui attentive - or those who love to use rocks for shakeable seasoning containers.

Each of these stones is made of porcelain, each having a different feel: smooth for the salt, rugged for the pepper. Salt: 6.5×5x3 CM, Pepper: 9×5.5×2.8 CM, Base: 11.5×7x2.3 CM.

Not for storing anything else! You scoundrel hippies, you.

Bulbs Are No Longer Meant For Light

The SoundBulb that we saw some time back, stood for sound innovation with lights. The question is, how do you up the ante and dish out something even more pioneering? The designers at Koo Touch got their gray cells ticking and dished out this awesome De-light! Stone In The Creek

Not all fixtures have to be slick, chromy, and minimal. There’s a place for a little bit of the ornate and organic too. The Stone in the Creek wall basin fixture not only looks good, but can also help save water. There are two modes, straight flow and side flow. The former spills water beneath the stone like a standard tap. The latter spills water 360º around the stone. Much less water is wasted so it’s ideal for washing hands.

To control the temperature, you turn the cylinder dish but there’s one caveat. Your hand will get wet if you have it in the side flow mode. Then again some would argue that makes sense since you can variably adjust the temperature accurately since your hand is getting wet.

Personal Humidifier in a Cup

I don’t know about where you live but here in Los Angeles the air is so incredibly dry, the office becomes stuffy by mid-morning. The simple solution would be to invest in a humidifier but a good one powerful enough to affect a large open office would be huge and expensive. The Pudding Cup is a personal humidifier small enough to lug around, yet powerful enough to moisturize the surrounding air.

It’s designed to look like a pudding dish/cup. It stores away neatly but when those high and dry times come, simply invert and dunk it into a water filled mug. Within minutes fresh water vapor will begin to condense and shoot out. The entire thing is rechargeable via USB. I’ve seen several USB powered humidifiers but none as charming as this.

Requiem for a Tea Bag

Have you ever had an experience with a tea bag? My answer is yes and no. Yes, I have experienced the totally awkward situation of having my tea bag be all used up, and having no place that’s ironic enough to let it wither up and die! Well, I’ll tell ya, I’ve been waiting my whole tea-bagging life for a place to bury my tea bag. And here it is!

Designer Jonas Trampedach provides a loller of a solution:

Where Do tea bags go to die?. Usually squashed on the side of the saucer next to the cup, or if you have a little less decorum the table will probably be just fine. Jonas Trampedach has been observing the behaviour of tea drinkers and has evidently been learning a lot. Consequently he has developed a solution to the bag dilemma that is as simple as it is ingenious. With the ‘Tea bag Coffin’, the drinker can tidily bury the bag under the cup and out of the way. RIP.
