We published this on our Twitter feed as it happened last week so Flim Flam is playing catch up this time (lost my camera's USB cable).

Anyway, the news — last Thursday we attended the British Interactive Media Association (BIMA) Awards representing our goodselves, BMAG and the wonderful Pre-Raphaelites. We were honored to be shortlisted for the Best Arts & Culture Website category.

The competition was pretty fierce and we really weren't expecting a win; making the shortlist was good enough for us humble folk. So, we were incredibly excited when our name was announced as the winner.

Someone in the crowd yelled "YEAH TAK!!!" as we headed to the stage to collect the award. It's fantastic our project which was up against others ten times the value won. Well done to everyone involved.

I was psyched to receive this in the mail last week. It had been almost a year(?) since the publisher, Korero Books, contacted me about including an illustration I had done for a flyer promoting the burlesque musical act of a couple of friends, Cherry Typhoon and Satoko. Satako belts out the tunes and commands the organ (as well as a variety of drums, whistles, etc), while Cherry mesmerizes the crowd with her ample figure and outsized stage persona. They blend aspects of both Japanese and burlesque performance traditions with humor and sexuality. It’s like some crazy Tom Waits meets Kabuki!

Besides showing an amazing array of contemporary work being done, the book is also a great resource of historical posters, highlighting some real gems of the past. The book is full of amazing, sometimes outrageous imagery, and I’m really glad to have been included.

An all analog 16mm Snowboard Movie - Pirates Jolly Roger

The Pirate Movie Production produced an all analog 16 mm snowboard movie and just released their Teaser. They stand out of the crowd through their artful filmaking skills and the atmosphere they create.The DVD will come with a 100-page art book again, packed with various works from motivated Pirates, including the riders. When did they arrive, where did they go, and how long did they stay? The results are presented in two dazzling visualizations.

TYPO Berlin 2009 - SPACE : kick-off

The smell of sweet freshly baked sausages followed me from the Berlin Mitte to the enormously charming venue of Haus der Kulturen der Welt. Designers from all corners of Germany, Europe and abroad slowly fill the Main Hall on the first floor. The taste of sweet strawberry juice touches my lips and flows down to my spine as the approximately 1500 attendees softly rest assured into the pillows of their chairs. As Simone Wolf and Donald Beekman approach the bench, silence slowly dawns upon the crowd. Every corner of the space wispers Deutsche GrÃ¼ndlichkeit and so the 14th International Design Conference, TYPO Berlin 2009 kicks off.

My Phone’s Gone Liquid

For the ignorant lot, LOHAS is Lifestyles of Health & Sustainability and a way of life for one out of every six Americans. I’m not faffing about this, but LOHAS consumers shop for products based on their values and world view, reflecting their desire for healthier and more sustainable lives. Catering to this crowd is the Aqua Liquid cellphone that uses liquid fuel cells technology in the name of eco-friendliness; although this lowers the efficiency of the phone.

All the components of the phone are eco-friendly and can be recycled at the end of their journey. The E-Ink display ensures that lesser juice is used up and the phone won’t conk-off mid-conversation!

LOHAS or not, I feel it’s the extremes that we humans demand out of nature lead to imbalances and degradation. I could be wrong about this, but I feel when we do everything in moderation we can add sustainability to every aspect of life. We don’t need to do anything special, we only need to care enough to make that difference.

The Berlin adidas House Party

Yesterday evening was the Berlin edition of the adidas House Party to celebrate the 60th birthday of adidas. It took place at the adidas No 74 Concept store. The shop was completly redecorated to fit the house party theme. There was no bar where you could get a drink, you just had to go to kitchen and fix yourself a drink. There were also regular pizza deliveries. It felt like a real house party. Of course the music was top notch too. It was a blast.
Besides the party, adidas organized a special sale yesterday. They sold 2500 pair of adidas Consortiums and adidas Originals sneakers for the amazing price of 20 euros a pair. This offer drew a huge crowd, but it went down in orderly way, you were only allowed to buy 3 pairs. The sales started at noon but there were still people waiting in line till very late in the evening.
I can only hope that this was just the start of adidas 60th birthday celebrations!

Semperopernball - Putin Love

Semperopernball 2009 in Dresden, Germany where Wladimir Putin arrived. Art avtivists promoting Putin in the crowd.

As you may know the ‘Semperopernball” happened at the 16th of januar 2009 in Dresdens famous “Semperoper”. The prices for a card went up to 44000 euros a table, so it was hardly suprising that only the higher class could participate in this event.

While everyone was freezing outside the building, the so called elite was having a nice party. Wladimir Putin was the guest of honour this evening and he should get a medal for his “great” cultural work in russia and germany.

The laudatory speech ended up in an embarrassing listing of what he does for the “great” relationship between germany and russia, the main reasons the moderator gave were the following: “Your daugther was born in Dresden” and ” Your german is really good”… nothing about wars, his engagement against the us terrorism or even the pieces of art he finally gave back to germany after World War 2.

What a great theatrical performance….

This year drew an even larger crowd, both exhibitors and installations had some amazing eye candy. Stars Is One of the Best Live Bands in the World

Last night I had the IMMENSE privilege of seeing Stars play at the Avalon here in Hollywood.I actually bought my tickets on Monday after finding out they released a new EP on September 1st, which subsequently led to me realizing that they were playing last night. I’ve been a pretty big fan of Stars for a few years now, my first encounter with them was hearing What the Snowman Learned About Love and then buying every record they’ve had before and since then. Basically, I couldn’t be more excited to see these guys play live.

I can say beyond a doubt that Stars puts on one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen. First off I’d say there was Amy Milan, who probably has some of the best stage presence ever. She’s also an amazing guitar player, something I didn’t know. She was totally captivating and made the whole thing even more exciting. Torquil, the male singer in Stars, was amazing in his own right, always sounding really in tune and busting out a trumpet on several songs, which was really incredible.

Overall they played everything I pretty much wanted to hear, though I’d have to say that the crowd favorite was Ageless Beatuy. Everyone was dancing and singing along, the lights were bright and pulsed along with the music, and you couldn’t help but smile the entire time. I can’t say anything bad about the show, it was simply epic.

Definitely check out the Sad Robots website to download the new EP, and if Stars roll into your town I can’t recommend seeing them any more highly, your mind (and eyes and ears) will be blown.

Dan Mumford’s talk went down really well yesterday, a great crowd attended the first in a series of talks hosted by 4 London creatives in the Nike 1948 pop up store.

More photos will be posted up on the flickr later today.

If you’re around East London today Garry Milne will be in the space kicking of the visual relay that will see 4 young creatives embellish a canvas each, leaving something on the next canvas (thus passing the visual baton…)

Smooth Sophisticated Smoking

When I think of pipe smoking, I imagine an older generation of men sitting around reading newspapers or conversing about times gone by. Yet with this new and sleek pipe design by Hakan Bogazpinar, I can see a much more hip, younger crowd partaking in its’ pleasures. Eolos is our modern day pipe. With a smooth, almost aerodynamic design, it looks the Ferrari for pipe smokers. With a built in filter replication indicator, the user can see that the nicotine level is too high and would need to change the filter. So if you like sleek and modern in your pipe then you just might fancy an Eolos.

Pils vs. vafler, Your Mamas Favourites vs. LMK Trønder Trashers. Det var lørdag og Byrom i et Portrom arrangerte battle i samarbeid med OKM. Det ble en flott dag, med mye bra graff og en fin crowd. Her følger en liten bildeserie:

Basert på teknikk og former ble YMF utropt som vinnere, men begge veggene ble superfreshe, og det er gøy å se 2 vidt forskjellig stiler og tolkninger av Noahs Ark som var temaet. Vi vil ha flere battles.

Over a thousand protesters here in Denver marched from the state capitol to the Pepsi Center on Sunday in the first major demonstration of the Democratic National Convention. Organized by the group Recreate 68, the protest temporarily blocked access to the convention site before police ordered the crowd to disperse. Speakers at the rally included antiwar activist Cindy Sheehan, Green Party presidential nominee Cynthia McKinney, and Vietnam veteran and antiwar activist Ron Kovic. (...)
