Painter Kelsey Brookes invites Computerlove into his beach side studio in San Diego.
By Matthew Newton, Senior Editor
Kelsey Brookes used to be a scientist. Before settling into life as a prolific painter whose work has been exhibited throughout the United States and Europe, he worked tracking viruses for the U.S. government. In fact, Brookes jokingly blames his raw, anxious form of art on America's university system which, as he puts it, "refuses to teach its scientists how to draw."
According to Brookes, his figurative paintings draw influence from Hindu and Buddhist deities, exotic animals, sex, and rustic American quilts. And in sublime bursts of color, the 31-year-old artist uses his figurative style to capture the ghostly nuances of the natural world. In the latest installment of Creative Craft, Kelsey Brookes invites Computerlove into his beach side studio in San Diego.

How much of an influence does environment have on your work process? I see that you live near the beach, that must have some sway in your work?
I believe that the environment does play a role in my process, though it is largely a subconscious influence. If nothing else I find myself more motivated to work if the sun is out and the birds are chirping.

What's an average workday like for you?
Wake up, eat breakfast, check the surf, check my email, start my favorite podcast, book on tape, or music, start painting, lunch, back to painting, yoga or run depending on the day, make dinner, and sleep.
It should be noted that anywhere with in this schedule I may insert a surf session depending on the wind, waves, and tide that day.

Your living space and work space are intertwined. Is this good for you? Bad?
The house I live in has a "granny flat," which is essentially a large garage that has been finished off into a one-bedroom guesthouse. I used to live there but have since converted it into my studio. I love it. Unfortunately it will be coming to an end shortly as I will be moving to a studio with taller ceilings, wider walls, and larger doors.

What are the challenges and rewards of being a working artist?
The most challenging parts are the most rewarding.

The look and feel of your paintings are really fresh. Who and/or what would you say influences your work?
Animals, colors, National Public Radio, science news, literature, poetry, death, hallucination, spirituality.

What are you working on right now, and what can folks expect to see from you in the near future?
I am working on my next show at Quint Contemporary Art in November. Full on every day from the time the sun comes up until the sun goes down at night I am working on this show. I'm excited.

"For people who live far away from the battle field war, War is only the news on the television or newspapers that can we see when we're eating food on the table while joking with family or friends.
War also being modified into the game or simulation without a care about the actual impact. We no longer care about who's right and who is wrong.. Who is the hero or who is villains. We enjoy it as entertainment of our daily lives. We see and we know about a war trough media, sometimes we a concerned and felt pity for a moment, and then, ..we forget about it."

Hongkong-Taipei based designer Kit Men Keung has created a new dual-time wall clock for Taiwanese brand Verso Lab.
Intended to allow users to read the times of twin time zones in a visually subtle style while maintaining a regular relationship with someone on the other side of the globe. The color contrast of the secondary clock hands has been delicately reduced to appear like a shadow on the face, acting as a conscious reminder of the distance between the user and his/her connections abroad. With a passing glance the user can quickly and easily attain the information from the clock.

This piece is available in both square and circular versions in either white or charcoal gray. Dimensions (W x H x D): 25cm x 25cm x 3.8cm.

Oh boy. I leave tomorrow for my big vacation to San Diego for 3 days and then the Big Island of Hawaii for 6 days. So, in the spirit of my Hawaii trip, I bring you this beautiful home which just so happens to be on the Big Island!
The house, located in a “kipuka”, (a Hawaiian word for a strip of old growth vegetation left undisturbed as the lava flowed around it) holds several trees predating the lava flow including 2 magnificent Monkeypod trees. The house grows out of the Kipuka cantilevering back over the lava flow much like the canopy of the Monkeypod trees.

Katie Paterson recorded the sound of 3 glaciers (Langjökull, Snæfellsjökull and Solheimajökull) on Iceland. She then pressed those recordings on ice record made of melt water from those glaciers. The records were played on 3 turntables and it took almost 2 hours till they were completely melted. You can listen to one here.

Can you believe it’s already Friday? I should currently be relaxing with a full belly of Thanksgiving treats and enjoying the company of my family, hopefully you’re doing something similar.
This week’s mix was created in a bit of a hurry, but I think it turned out pretty well. I approached this week’s mix a little bit differently, creating a big chunk of songs in the middle which go for about 36 minutes or so. Let me know if you prefer this format or if I should continue breaking up the Mixcasts like I have in the past. I hope you enjoy the mix and let me know if anything catches your ear!
Here’s this week’s tracklist:

Teeth by Bowerbirds
Total Destruction by Akron/Family
